Ingredients 

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb dried beans any variety
  • 1 ham hock or 2 cups diced ham
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 6 cups water
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions 

  1. Rinse and sort the beans.
  2. In a large pot, combine beans, ham hock, onion, garlic, bay leaf, and water.
  3. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 1 hour, or until beans are tender.
  4. Remove bay leaf and ham hock. If using ham hock, remove meat from the bone, chop, and return to pot.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
